Canon PowerShot A650 Telephoto Samples

The Canon A650 has a focal range of 7.4mm to 44.4mm, or the 35mm film equivalent of 35mm to 210mm. The camera records actual focal length, a number between 7.4mm and 44.4mm To convert actual focal length to film equivalent, multiply by 4.73. To calculate the focal length with a given teleconverter, multiply the cameras focal length by the power of the converter. For instance, the A650 at full zoom is 210mm, x 1.54x (Raynox DCR-1540) = 323.4mm. We've listed focal lengths in 35mm film equivalents because that's what most users are familiar with.

In this test, we've included some of the more popular teleconverters, including two Canon converters designed for other cameras. We were unable to test the Canon TC-DC58B which was designed for the S2/3 because the A650s lens crashes into it at the full tele setting.

The telephoto samples below were taken using the Lensmate 52m and 58mm lens adapters and the teleconverters described below. The first image of the pair is taken with the camera at full telephoto zoom.

The second image is taken with the camera zoomed back to the point at which vignetting begins to appear to demonstrate the actual useful zoom range of the converter. As the lens is zoomed back to the wide angle setting, the corners darken and eventually the image becomes circular.

To evaluate these images, be sure to open the full size (actual pixels) image, or click rectangle for quarter crop to reduce download time. Almost all the samples look good in the center, so be sure to check the edges and corners as well.

Camera settings are as follows: (in case you can't read the exif in the full size images)

ISO = 80
Aperture f4.8-5.
Ev - 1/3
White Balance – Sunny
Contrast –Low
Saturation – Low
Sharpness – Low
Image Size – Large
Jpeg compression - Superfine

These samples were taken with the Canon G7 since the Canon A650IS and the Canon G7/9 have identical built-in lenses.

In this case, the 1.4x digital zoom crop is compared to the Raynox DCR1540 1.54x (left), and the 2.3x digital zoom crop is compared to the Raynox DCR2020 2.2x (right) .

Canon A650 and Raynox DCR1540Pro 1.54x

Raynox DCR1540Pro 1.54x. Excellent image quality, in fact slightly better in the corners than the Canon TC-DC58C which was designed for the A650. Not quite as powerful, but a lighter and more compact package. Also has the distinction of being one of only two teleconverters we tested that has front threads for filters and hoods. 52mm mount, requires A650 58mm adapter and 58-52mm stepring has 67mm filter threads. Weight – 9 0z.

Canon A650 and Canon S1 IS 1.6x

We included this converter designed for Canon S1 IS for those that might already own this lens. Some edge/corner softness, but surprisingly good results for such a compact lens. 52mm mount, used with a A650 58mm adapter and a 58mm-52mm step ring, 5.8 oz.

Canon A650 and Sony VCL-DH1758 1.7x

Another one we get a lot of inquiries about. More edge/corner softness than we like. Must use spacer or UV filter between the lens and adapter to avoid lens crash. 58mm mount. 9 oz.

Canon A650 and Raynox DCR-1850Pro 1.85x

Though listed as compatible by Raynox, we can’t really recommend its use on the A650.
Overall softness, especially in the corners. 52mm mount, used with A650 58mm adapter and 58-52mm step ring. 10.2 oz.

Canon A650 and Kenko KNT-20 2x

Another old favorite, but not compatible with the A650 due to overall softness/haziness. 52mm mount.
Must be used with A650 58mm adapter and 58mm-52mm step ring to avoid lens crash.

Canon A650 and Raynox DCR-2020Pro 2.2x

The most powerful converter we tested. Though somewhat soft in the periphery, it could be ideal for birding or situations when this might not be an issue. 62mm thread mount, step ring for the 58mm adapter are included. 10.5 oz.
