Having a metal thread, it will never strip or cross thread like a plastic adapter can. You'll also find that the adapter provides a place for your left hand - especially handy when using the viewfinder. Both hands on the camera and the viewfinder to your eye provides the most stable platform for avoiding camera shake.
Those who like the full time protection a lens adapter provides will be glad to know there are no blocking issues common to similar cameras. Because the S2 IS has an electronic viewfinder, the adapter is never visible in the viewfinder - and there's no flash shadow at any focal length either with the built in pop-up flash.
Some may find the 36mm wide end of the S2 IS limiting, but with the quick-change bayonet mount, adding or changing lenses is a snap. In addition to the Canon wide converter WC-DC58A .75X, several non-Canon wide converters can be used with the S2 IS. The Tiffen .75x, Raynox DCR-720, the new Raynox DCR-730, and the Raynox 6600. For non-Canon teleconverters, the Raynox 1540 1.54x performs well. Samples from all of these lenses, as well as macro lenses are included here.
S2 IS FAQ
What's the length of the LensMate S2 52mm adapter?
1.625" or 41.28mm.
What's the length of the LensMate S2 58mm adapter?
1.697" or 43.1mm. This is exactly the same length as the Canon 58mm adapter.
Why is the 52mm adapter shorter?
The Canon 58mm adapter is designed around their converters. We designed our 52mm adapter to be as short as possible to minimize the potential for vignetting (darkened corners) with wide-angle converters.
Can the 52mm adapter itself cause vignetting at the wide angle setting?
No, neither the 52mm nor the 58mm adapter will cause any vignetting at any focal length.
Can I use a 52mm adapter with a 52-58 step ring to use a 58mm lens or filter?
Sometimes. If you're stepping up to a filter or lens hood, no problem. If you're stepping up to a wide converter, you might encounter vignetting.
Can I use both a polarizer and collapsible lens hood on the 52mm adapter?
Yes, but this configuration is right on the edge of vignetting, (click here to see sample image). If you don't mind touching up one or more corners, this might work for you. If you're using a UV filter (thinner than a polarizer) and a hood, there should be no problem. In either case, attach the hood to the adapter, then the filter to the hood. Otherwise the hood itself will vignette.
At this time, the 58mm hood from our supplier is the same outside diameter as the 52mm hood, so is just as likely to vignette slightly.
I find it difficult to thread the converter onto the adapter, what am I doing wrong?
You'll find that it's much easier to thread the converter onto the adapter before mounting the assembly onto the camera. It's also a good idea to turn the camera off so the lens retracts before attaching the adapter to avoid the possibility of damaging the zoom lens. If you have more than one converter, you might want to get an adapter for each so they'll always be ready to bayonet onto the camera quickly.
Which adapter should I buy?
If you're only using filters, a sun hood, a macro lens, or any of the wide converters tested here (except the Canon WC-DC58A .75x), get the 52mm adapter. If you're using the Canon converters or already have 58mm filters or accessories, get the 58mm adapter.
Can I use the 52mm adapter with a step-up ring for the Canon WC-DC58A?
No. Besides the possibility of vignetting, the thread on this lens (and the Canon teleconverter) is extra long with an unthreaded portion on the end which eliminates the possibility of threading it into anything but the the Canon or Lensmate 58mm adapter.
Can I put a polarizer on my wide converter?
Of all the wide converters we tested, only three, the Raynox DCR720, Tiffen .75x, and Raynox 6600 have a front thread. Of these three, only the Tiffen can accomodate a filter or hood (not both) without vignetting.
Can I put a polarizer/hood on my teleconverter?
Of all the teleconverters we tested, only the Raynox 1540Pro and the Raynox 2020Pro have front threads. Their sizes are 67mm and 82mm respectively. You can use both a filter and hood simutaneously with either converter.
