Some
may find the 38mm wide end of the S1 IS limiting, but with the
quick-change bayonet mount, adding a wide converter only takes
seconds. With a wide conversion
lens you can easily change the existing 38mm to up to 25mm.*
These
Canon S1 IS wide-angle samples were taken using the LensMate
52mm lens adapter and a variety of wide converters. The
first image shows the full wide setting, then subsequent images
show longer focal lengths up to full tele. Because
there is no real-time indicator of focal length on the S1,
the focal lengths shown are not exactly the same in each series
of images, but they do show approximately how well a wide
converter works with the S1 when used as a zoom lens.
We
used architecture for the sample shots to show barrel distortion
clearly. This is a worst case scenario for wide angle converters.
In a natural landscape setting, even the worst barrel distortion
may go unnoticed. Additionally, this type of barrel
distortion can be corrected via software.
*The
focal length shown in S1 EXIF is actual, ranging from 5.8mm
to 58mm. The 35mm film equivalent would be
38mm - 380mm, therefore the multiplier is 6.55 when converting
one to the other.
